During
the 1850`s a new ambassador arose in the form of Emma
Hardinge Britten. Born in England, but moved to America
to work. Emma became famous as a trance medium, (see
medium skills). She toured America, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand spreading the word. But mediums of this
era were subjected to ridicule and persecution from both
the Church and other sceptics.
The first medium to operate in Britain was a Mrs.
Hayden, who took residence in London and held séances.
But it was a group of Cambridge scholars who, in 1882
founded the Society for Psychical Research, pushed the
subject further into recognition. Their aim was to
`investigate debatable phenomena without prejudice`,
even if that claim itself was debatable.
The early demonstrations of mediumship were all very
physical, rapping's, table-tilting, materialisation's
etc. but over the years these declined in popularity to
be replaced by the type of mediumship we witness today.
Nowadays modern mediums work by using the mind as
receiver and relaying information to those who need it.
The evidence given of the after-life can be even more
convincing in this manner.
So What Is A Medium
Well my description that follows is my own description and is
no way set in stone.
Mediums
are people with everyday lives who have a special gift
that allows spirit people to give messages from the
afterlife. A mediums work is to prove survival of life
after death and to help the bereaved come to terms with
their loss or just to pass messages of love and
encouragement. Readings with mediums are not for fortune
telling but are what's best described as experimental
sessions to provide evidence of survival. Any attempt to
communicate with Spirit is, by its very nature, purely
experimental and therefore, results can never be
guaranteed but quite often so accurate its very difficult
to dismiss.
Mediumship mainly takes two forms 1st there is
Physical phenomena which is of such a nature that it
is usually demonstrated only at private séance or maybe at
an organised overnight vigil (see paranormal section) .
Any person sitting with a medium can hear or see what is
happening. By means of Taps, Raps, audible voices or
materialised figures, the spirit people convey intimate
information about themselves, their recollection of their
earthly lives and details of their lives in the spirit
world.
Mental phenomena is demonstrated through the mind
of a medium. Mediums identify Three forms of mental
mediumship and 1 rare
1. CLAIRVOYANCE A person who is Clairvoyant can see
Spirits. This usually means they see the person
communicating in their minds eye, which can be in the form
of a picture or like watching a television in your head.
Some Mediums can see Spirits with their Physical eyes as
if there is another person in the same room as
themselves. The Medium will then describe what they see
to whoever is having a reading. It is not always people
that Mediums see, it can also be animals or even objects
and symbols. Some objects will be given to the Medium to
be interpreted symbolically.
2. CLAIRAUDIENCE With this form of Mediumship the
person hears the spirit communicating with them. Again
this can be voices in the Mediums head or thoughts running
through the mind. Sometimes a Medium will actually hear
someone talking to them with their physical ears. The
medium will not only "hear" voices but can also be given
music or singing.
3. CLAIRSENTIENCE This in some schools of
Mediumship is the most common form and experienced very
often by people just beginning to understand the gift that
they have. This type of Mediumship takes the form of the
Medium sensing a spirit presence, usually through
feelings. Mediums often feel as if they are being
touched, feelings of cold or slight breezes wafting past
them. Sometimes they can have the feeling of cobwebs on
their face or can even smell fragrances associated with
the spirit presence of their time on earth.
4. Empathic ( quite rare ) This
is where the medium takes on the condition to which the
spirit passed over this form can be a little like trance
and can be quite physical and very draining to the
medium being channelled but often results in very clear
and accurate information.
