Massage Therapy

A massage therapist is a person that is licensed or certified to use massage as a form of therapy in which they use their touch to work on the muscles of the body.  There are over 80 different types of massages that massage therapists can learn; each one is called a modality.  Each type of massage is done for a variety of reasons such as relaxation, stress relief, treatment of painful aches, pains and ailments, treatment of injuries as well as promotion of overall good health.  Massage therapists can be found in hospitals, spas and even their own home as there is a wide range of treatments available.

Each type of massage offers something different but one thing they have in common is how the massage is done over the tissues of the body.  It can include deep-tissue molding, reflexology, acupressure, and more.  Many massage therapists learn different types of massage techniques in order to specialize in several different approaches.  This allows them to work on a variety of people with different tissues problems.  Depending on what kind of treatment is needed, a massage can last from 10 minutes to two hours, with most relaxation massages lasting about 60 minutes.

Massage therapists can either go to school to learn the art of massage or they can attend an intense massage therapist’s course workshop in which they can become certified to do massages of all different varieties.  They learn exaggerated stroke techniques, cupped or fisted hands technique, as well as other techniques in order to bring about relief to the clients body.  Depending on what the client needs, a massage therapist can change his or her technique in order to bring the most relief.  For example, sport injury massages are very different from relaxation massages.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

The benefits of massage therapy are vast but they are primarily useful for whatever treatment the client is in need of.  The general benefits include alleviating lower back pain and improving range of motion, easing the dependence of pain medication for those who suffer from tissue or body pain, the enhancement of immunity by stimulating the lymph flow which works as a natural defense against illness or simply strengthening or loosening tight muscles.  Massage therapy can also be used for easing labor in expectant mothers, the helping of athletes to prepare and recover from workouts, and increasing joint flexibility in those with tight joints.

Overall, massage therapists can help to lessen anxiety and depression by help with breathing and relaxation techniques, they can promote tissue regeneration and even help improve circulation.  Massage therapy is incredibly therapeutic to the body and that is the reason that so many people use it to pamper their body.  But aside from the great feeling it gives you, it helps decrease anxiety, increase the quality of sleep and gives you more energy.  No matter what the reason to use a massage therapist, the effects of this kind of therapy go well beyond simply feeling good.
